The Real Deal - Maybe

The weekend of October 17-19 the newly appointed ABC/WIBC Collegiate Committee met for the first time. Appointed to meet were WIBC Directors Sue Kresge and Cissie Bryant along with ABC Executive Vice President Duncan MacPherson and myself, representing ABC as a Director at large. The purpose of the initial meeting was to set the direction for the already here season and for the future of Collegiate Bowling.

Preparing for the meeting I couldn't help but wonder if this was going to be another experience where my hopes of moving forward would be dashed. It didn't take long when I found myself saying inside- Kerm this could be the "REAL DEAL". When I arrived for 8:00 AM meeting in Milwaukee, also present in the room were Rose Ann Kuhn-Exec. Director of WIBC; Roger Dalkin-ABC Exec. Director; Don Harris-CEO of BPAA; Tamora Adams-Director of WIBC; representing WIBC President Joyce Deitch and of course Chris Stoehr. Within minutes it was very clear ABC, WIBC and BPAA were committed to the Collegiate Program. All three want it to go forward on the NCAA front, the Campus front and the Intercollegiate front. Also made clear was a plan would be made and things will start to move.

Roger and Rose Ann informed the committee a Collegiate Manager will be on Board by no later than January 1, 1999. Applications have been receive, will be reviewed and interviews will be scheduled ASAP. No more dragging of feet. The Committee was directed to begin moving forward and to be prepared to bring the incoming Collegiate Manager up to speed when he/she enter the picture.

The Committee, hearing the directives loud and clear jumped right in the pile.

A. Cissie Bryant and Don Harris will contact Bill Straub of Nebraska and address a plan for encouraging NCAA Programs to select Bowling as a sport for their Women's Program.

B. Kerm Helmer will contact ACIU with the plan of forming a partnership to develop programs for increasing Recreational Bowling on campus.

C. Cissie Bryant will inform Chris Stoehr who the elected Chairman of the Wichita Host Committee for the Championships will be and Chris will get on developing the schedule and functions for Championships 1999.

In regards to the Championships in 1999, from the initial report Cissie gave I am becoming more and more a believer the participants are going to really enjoy this year's event. The Host Proprietor has opened up his lanes schedule to accommodate what ever schedule is necessary to have a solid event. No more in by 7:00 am and have to be out by 5:30 PM. The Host committee has some good ideas for side activities for the participants and is flexible in their scheduling as well.

I know I have been down the road before and I know I have been excited about new beginnings before and they have all died on the vine, but with the Collegiate Division back with ABC and WIBC combined with apparent real interest by BPAA this could be the beginning of "The Real Deal".
