Ladies and Gentlemen, Start Your Engines

For the next couple of weeks across the nation, most of the Collegiate programs will be in the process of selecting their squads for the coming season. In Western New York, qualifiers will be on tap of the Erie C. C., Canisius College, Buffalo State and Niagara C. C.. Any men or women attending these campuses and interested in becoming a part of their intercollegiate programs should contact the respective coaches ASAP. For Erie C.C. it is Kerm Helmer @ 851-1746, Canisius College/Jeff Kupinski, Buffalo State/Henry Allenbach and Niagara C.C./John Rieker @ 731-3271 x519.

It is real exciting to see Niagara C. C. starting up bowling again after a season of absence. Athlectic Director Lee Wallace of Niagara C. C. and Coach John Rieker are hoping to have both a menís and womenís team set to go before the end of the first semester and expects to compete in at least 3-4 tournament events.

When the WNY squads are selected, a run down on teams will be printed and an outlook for the season will be forecast.

It appears the tournament trail will begin with the Hoosier Classic in Indianapolis the weekend of October 17-18 then followed up by the Brunswick Atlanta Tournament the next weekend. The Indy tournament attracted a solid field last year and the conditions were far from easy. The Atlanta Tournament has been solid for years with the ladies of Morehead and the men from St. Johnís usually dominating the event. WNY has been absent from these events in the past and the reason has been the dates are a little early to get ready, especially the Indy affair. Many Southern college and Mid-West colleges begin classes and tryouts in August putting WNY a couple of weeks behind in the organizing process.

Erie C.C. has already announced they will add the November 6-7 Brunswick Great Lakes Classic held in Chicago to the 1998-99 schedule. Buffalo State is also considering the trip to the Windy City. The tournament is one of the nine automatic berth tournaments held during the regular season and annually attracts a field of 80 teams. Word has it the tournament is well run and it is a great shakedown prior to heading to St. Louis over Thanksgiving for the always exciting St. Louis Match Games Championships.

No word yet on the Dick Ritger Invitational usually held the first Saturday in November. If it still is on tap and falls this year on Saturday, October 31, one week prior to Chicago, WNY will most likely be well represented in Canisius, Erie C.C. and Buffalo State. Ides Lanes, Ithaca would be the host and it is an easy down and back trip for Buffalo are colleges.
