All College Coaches and Bowlers,
Are there any thoughts on not bowling on Sundays? I would rather travel on Friday, bowl in the evening, and then finish on Saturday. We travel to most tournaments in 4 hours or less, so leaving campus at noon or 2 pm would be no big deal for us. This allows students to get back to campus, rest and study on Sunday. Church is also important to me. What are your thoughts?

As a Coach I have mixed feelings about it.
I like the idea of not bowling on Sundays, but bowling on fridays would be hectic. You would have to travel, check in to the hotel and then bowl. As a bowler, I always hated traveling and bowling on the same day, but then again, some teams do it all the time.

As a proprietor, it's out of the question. Fridays is both a league night and a big open play night. I think many centers would be in the same situation. Asking us to give our most profitable nights in the middle of winter makes the college tournament undoable.

Thanks Coach Lightfoot. But when we travel, many times it is leave Sat morn and go straight to bowl, then check into hotel. I do understand that it is more profitable for the proprietor. Any more thoughts from others out there.

For me, I have a full time job on top of coaching. So that means I would have to take the full day off on Friday to travel instead of just a couple of hours. And in my job, that makes a huge difference.

One other suggestion would be to ask some of the smaller tournaments to go to a one day format. That may make your Saturday a little longer, but then you could do it all in one day. I'm not, personally, a fan of the one day events, but that might be an option for you.

And as a tournament director, I agree with Randy. It would be nearly impossible to get one of my centers for Friday night. I have a hard enough time trying to secure paddock space on a Friday night.

Thanks Coach Wochner. I no longer have a full time job as I am retired. I started coaching when I had a full time job however and I realize how demanding it is. I no longer put in 80 hours a week working. I like one day tourneys. I know some Tier one tourneys could not do any of this. Smaller tourneys should consider it.

As a club program it would be very difficult for our student-athletes to regularly miss Friday classes. In the past, our professors have usually been understanding of limited requests for excused absences (like for post-season events). However, that might not be so true if such requests became much more frequent. Bowling on a Friday night, would require leaving that morning and/or afternoon when classes are still in session.

One day Saturday only events are a regular part of our schedule as they save a lot of money when it comes to travel costs (like lodging), while also minimizing the time away from campus. Both the Adrian Open and the Falcon Classic are one day events that we bowled in this year that would also be within driving distance for most schools in Ohio.

Karl,
Thanks for the response. I am very aware of the one day events. Timing is the key as well. I hope we see more of the one day events.
