The USBC Sectional Qualifiers have used the current format for the past 12 seasons (2000-2011) to advance teams to the Intercollegiate Championships. This length of time provides an opportunity to look back at some of the history of the 64 Baker game sectional format and the schools that have competed. Over the next few days, I will go back through those results and pull out some interesting facts and statistics.

A note about the detail of the sectional data. I do not have game-by-game records for these events, but have been able to reconstruct all 12 years to the level of the 16 game Baker block totals for all participating schools.

GETTING TO HALFWAY

Posting a strong second block of 16-Baker games is critical for those teams looking to advance to the ITC. The morning block is over, and assuming the lanes were not re-conditioned at lunch, teams will have to deal with what is leftover from before. Factors outside of their control, like the lane surface at the host center and the play of prior teams crossing a particular pair, can make the second block very difficult. Athletes only get a few shots per lane (that count) to figure things out. But the rewards for a strong second block are there. For the men, the team leading the event at the end of day one has advanced to the ITC 95.83% of the time, or 19 out of 20 times. For the women, the teams in first AND second at the midpoint have advanced to the ITC every time at every sectional for twelve straight years. In fact, only 2 of the 98 women's teams that have been in first or second after 32 Baker games - 4 sections x 12 years x 2 teams (i.e. first or second after day 1) - have even dropped as low as fourth place at the end of the event.

How important is the second block? In the 2008 Central Region at Holiday Bowl Brainerd in Chattanooga, TN, the Vincennes men's team got off to slow start. They opened with a 2942 in the first 16-Baker games which landed them in 14th place out of 17. Having been ranked 12th in the final power ranking, this was not what they had expected or hoped for. Coming back from the lunch break, Vincennes posted games of [245-234][228-191][257-201][244-244][203-267][196-211][193-214][191-243] for a 3562 16-Baker game total. This was an increase of 620 over their opening block. This team in 14th place after the first 16 games moved up 12 spots to 2nd overall by the end of the day. On day two, they backed-it up with sets of 3205 and 3192 to finish third, a comfortable 392 pins ahead of the cut team in fifth place. The second 16-Baker game set of 3562 was pretty big. It was 11 pins higher than the best men's opening block ever at 3551. Was it good enough to be the highest second block ever?

The Vincennes set, a great comeback, was the highest second block when shot, but for only one season. In the 2009 Midwest Region at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, IL, the Nebraska-Lincoln men shot 3573, moving them from 3rd place at the lunch break to 1st place at the end of the day. The 3562 shot by Vincennes remains tied for second. While Nebraska-Lincoln was posting their record setting score, Wichita State was right behind them posting a 3562 for the very same set. To find the highest women's score for the second block, we have to go all the way back to the 2000 East Region at Eastland Lanes in Lexington, KY. The Morehead State women shot 3408 to open a 769 pin lead over second place Florida State. As you may recall from the earlier post on "Total Domination" that was the year Morehead State finished the event 1224 pins ahead of the runner-up. The second best women's 16-Baker block for games 17-32 was a 3362, also in 2000, by Nebraska-Lincoln in the West Region at Reno Hilton Bowling Center in Reno, NV.
